Four more years
I really do hope Barack Obama is president for another fours years (and will do everything I can to help make it happen) but I couldn’t help thinking about one thing: How cool is it going to be when the person in front of that podium is a woman? A woman, standing up with what will probably be two men behind her and in front of a room full of more mostly (white) men in front of her, maybe in...

“Don’t Be A Di*k During Meals With Friends.” The first person to crack and look at their phone picks up the check. Our (initial) purpose of the game was to get everyone off the phones free from twitter/fb/texting and to encourage conversations. Rules: 1) The game starts after everyone has ordered. 2) Everybody places their phone on the table face down. 3) The first person...

Things I am thankful for:
My super-incredible best friends, who when they come home to find me on the couch with a bottle of wine at two in the afternoon, wouldn’t judge me — no, they’d just pour themselves a glass. And who express emotion in the form of haikus. They’re the greatest. My department, which “makes” me read and talk and write about a topic I love all the god damn time, and...

The fourth new apartment in 12 months
This is it — the last “new apartment” I’ll have for at least nine months, if not a year. After this whirlwind of a shitshow of a blast of a year, what a weird thought. I’ll be sleeping in the same bed, hanging out with the same people, in the same city for the next nine months. Just saying that to myself gives me this little pit of anxiety in my stomach that makes me...

Because I never break tradition
Leaving for Evanston early Thursday morning (so about 36 hours from now) and I have not yet begun packing, or even considered packing.  Although, to be fair, I never really unpacked from moving out of Foggy Bottom, so most of my crap is already in garbage bags. And “packing” tomorrow is actually going to consist of me sitting on my bed, directing my mom around as she puts stuff into...

The little things
I’m home, back in Fairfax, and sitting on my couch watching Netflix because the repairman is fixing our television. I have him convinced that I hurt my knee by getting into a bar fight. “You should see the other girl,” I told him. “She was shitfaced.” “What’d she do?” he asked me. “Got up in my space. I politely asked her, she said no, she...

So one of my roommates has this friend who just sucks. She’s in DC for the summer taking a class, and is currently sitting in our apartment eating dinner. The highlights of yesterday’s doctor’s appointment: He doesn’t think I need an MRI — I definitely tore the tissue under the kneecap, which is why it’s so swollen — but an MRI won’t tell us anything new. In order for that tissue to heal, the joint needs to be totally immobilized for at least two weeks, probably longer.  I’m genetically inclined to...

Broken
Saturday night we were at a bar in Columbia Heights called “Wonderland.” It’s a hipster-bar, no doubts about it — lots of plaid, skinny jeans, fedoras and people staring as we danced and danced. I was with Mimi and some of her brother’s friends, and we were having a good time. Somehow we had become the center of the dancing — we kept creating dance circles,...

So for the past month, the internet in our apartment has only worked on Kendra’s computer and not on mine. We figured it must be some problem with our service, but because we didn’t know our account info we couldn’t contact the service provider and get them to come fix it. Turns out, we’re just idiots — all we had to do is restart the router and bam, accio internet....
